When it comes to children’s room, creating a shared space can be difficult. Make it a shared space for a little boy and a little girl of different ages and with very different preferences and it becomes nearly impossible! A recent e-Design client came to me with this challenge and I jumped at the opportunity!

Check out the mood board I created for this project.  The entire scheme was based around a gender neutral core, with the walls painted in Sherwin Williams Rainwashed.  Not only is this color a great gender neutral choice, it is also a timeless paint color that will age well with the children and lend itself to maturing decor.

This room was large enough that it could easily be separated into two distinct spaces. To create a cohesive theme between both areas the bed frames and bedside lamps are the same.

A faux fur area rug was layered over the existing carpet to give extra definition of space to the little girl’s area.

how to decorate a shared bedroom 1

Placing a bookcase and some vinyl wall decals in an awkward window alcove creates a functional and cozy place for reading. Simple shadow boxes filled with vintage toy trucks create balance with the feminine vintage butterfly needlepoint that hangs above.

Overall the room is bright, modern, young and caters to the tastes of both the children. My client was extremely pleased with the solution to her design dilemma– I can’t wait to see how it looks when she pulls it all together.  In need of a personalized design solution?
