I recently got the chance to partner up with an amazing designer and old friend, Cheryl Behnke, to work on a budget friendly face lift for a new yoga studio.  The client wanted to keep all existing wall and floor finishes and add decor, personalized accents and smart storage.

Working with so many existing materials can sometimes be a creative roadblock… but in this case I think we came up with some really beautiful solutions to create a soothing and updated interior.

The existing icy blue walls made the large space seem cold and barren. To offset it we added warm accent paint colors, texture, and warmth through fabric.

There wasn’t need for many fixtures, but what we did select needed to be functional. Storage for client’s personal belongings was a must!

The existing raised platforms were the perfect spot to create interest and focal point. The recessed wall pocket was painted with Sherwin Williams Antiquity and then overlaid with DIY wall decor. 1 x 2 wood slats, stained in a warm dark stain (Sherwin Williams New Ebony)

We wanted to create warmth, texture and interest in the entrance lobby area with… you guessed it..WALLPAPER! Because this was an extremely budget conscious design we used trim dropped down to 7′-6″ above finished floor so that we would only have to purchase one roll of this amazing OH JOY paper!

Since this studio was going to be used for yoga classes as well as dance performances we needed a way to incorporate mirrors into the space that could be easily covered. The ceilings are over 14 feet high so adding floor- to- ceiling, wall-to-wall drapes was out of the question when it came to budget. Instead we designed 4 custom screens on a rolling track system that can be used as decorative wall decor when the mirrors are needed, and slide over the mirrors during the performance. The slat screens help tie together the custom decor at the front of the space while adding a pop of complimentary color.  The fabric panels soften the space, while doubling as a tackable surface for important messages from the studio.

All in all the overall design comes in at less than $1000 for materials and can easily be implemented in phases that work with the owner’s budget.  It really doesn’t get more zen than that!

Allison
