The living room is one of the most well used rooms in our house. It’s where family comes together to watch TV, surf the web, read and so much more.  If your house is anything like mine, at the end of a busy day the coffee table is a pile of tablets, phones, laptops & books. And if you are anything like me it DRIVES. YOU. CRAZY. We often think of these techy gadgets belonging in a dedicated office space, but the portability of all of our devices now demands a new design strategy. Clients often ask me, how can I keep my living room clutter free and looking great?

Creating a “LIVING ROOM TOUCH DOWN POINT” is a great solution I have come up with for my clients with the same  tech clutter problem.

A designated resting place for all these gadgets helps keep your living space organized, beautiful and clutter free. Here is how you can put it all together!

1. Use a narrow writing desk or console table along an empty or underused wall. This will serve as your physical “touch down point” providing a designated surface for all your gadgets to reside at the end of the day.

2.  Add a fun chair with a bold pattern or shape.  Go for interest here, it doesn’t have to be as comfy as a desk chair because you won’t be spending hours in it. The chair will help define the zone and may even become one of your favorite places for surfing the web.

3.Use the vertical space above the touch down point to add elements that will anchor the furniture below it. This will help the table and chair feel purposeful rather than a leftover piece of furniture haphazardly placed against an open wall.

4.Add color and personality to the area. This could be done through a gallery wall on the wall above, adding wall mounted sconces for task lighting, a mirror or family photos. This is how the design blends function + personality and aesthetic!

5. Place functional elements on the touch down point. Decorative boxes can be clever ways to store tablets, phones and charging cords. Lucite or metal trays can serve as a catch all for smaller items that end up floating around the living room!

Creating functional + purposeful zones is a huge part of what successful interior design is all about.

By adding a “touch down” point in your living room you can help control the clutter while maintaining a picture perfect interior!
