Whenever I see a client check “eclectic” under the style preference in my design questionnaire my heart skips a beat. It is my MOST favorite style in which to pull a space together.

I love creating layered and textural spaces that give the impression that the items have been collected over time and are a true reflection of the occupant’s personality.

Although getting this right, without it looking like a hot mess can be tricky! Here are a few tips on how to nail the Eclectic style for your space!

1. Layer Layer Layer

Eclecticism is all about a variety of ideas and styles. By layering a variety of textures– like a sisal area rug underneath a plush Moroccan shag rug– you can create diversity in your decor items. The window is another great area to do this. Try using a woven grass roman shade flanked by two luxurious silk stationary panels. Just be sure to keep colors in the same family to create cohesiveness within the diversity.

2. Add textural elements

Dimensional wall art is a great way to do this! I love the idea of incorporating sculptural mirrors and vintage marquee letters to create interest and personalize the space!

3. Use unexpected patterns

Step outside of your comfort zone with bold patterns on walls and textiles. Right now I am loving what Graham and Brown Wallpaper has to offer!  Funky motifs and bold colors are a fun way to express a unique eclectic point of view.

4. Mix Styles

This goes hand-in-hand with point number one. Create diversity in your furnishings–use an industrial metal shoe locker for your front entrance area and flank by two upholstered benches in a more luxurious style. The contrast in the styles emphasizes the broad range of tastes encompassed by your eclectic taste!

5.  Have fun!

Don’t be worried about being too matchy matchy–that’s the whole beauty of the eclectic style! It doesn’t have to match, just needs to be cohesive! Look for repetition in patterns while bringing diversity in through color. Or create cohesiveness through a common color thread while varying the style of the furnishings dramatically. Always include items that you love and are a reflection of your personality!
