For me travel to a new and unknown destination always sparks creativeness. There are so many fresh things to take in and draw inspiration from.  In my travels through Scandinavia this year I have found myself drawn to the large expanses of saturated primary colors used in building architecture. I mean really.. these countries can make a yellow house look good, who else can do that?!

Here is how I broke it down:

From left to right: Copenhagen, Denmark & Bergen, Norway

a. Color blocking! Solid expanses of uninterrupted color create the beautiful street scenes above.  Selecting a sofa like ther Merlin Red Sleep Sofa gives you a base to work from.

b .Add texture and pattern! This can be done through small pops on your walls or floor. This rug from Capel Rugs gives the illusion of a solid expanse of color while still creating visual interest.

c. Not all the pieces in your space need to be from the same design era. Mix and match sleek modern pieces like this armoire from Dwell with ones that have more of a vintage flair.
