Are you looking to make some changes to your home to start the new year? One easy way to get a fresh look is to restyle shelving.

This is one of my favorite ways to update a room because you can use items you already have floating around your home.  I love how you can bring  new life to accessories just by moving them to a new location whether it be to another shelf or to an entirely different space.

Here are 10 tips and tricks on how to make shelving a feature in any space.

1. To make your books and accessories pop, paint the backs of shelving a different color or cover them with a patterned wallpaper for added drama

2. Color coordinate books to visually keep the eye moving

3. Arrange books horizontally to add variety and height to items that can be placed on top of the stacks

4. Include unique accessories that may be special to you and can create a statement

5. Shelves are the perfect location to add photos of loved one and make any space feel more personal

6. Leaning artwork against the shelving backs adds color and creates an interesting feature

7. Include smaller plants or flowers to brighten up the space

8. Stack decorative boxes for added storage for smaller items that can be hidden away

9. Always add books first and then fill in with accessories and smaller items

And most importantly……

10. Don’t forget to leave some empty space in between groupings to create a visual pause and a cleaner look
