When we talk styling, some clients get scared away. But hear me out! By intentionally choosing and using certain decor accessories, we can give your space (particularly a newly renovated space) that lived-in feel by adding curated and layered pieces. When done right, this styling also adds function to the overall design. Trays to move things quickly on or off of a table, baskets for decorative storage of towels or teddy bears. Candlesticks for, you know, candles.

Styling is what makes a space feel finished. And you probably have many of these items around your house already, waiting to be placed and used a bit differently to give your home that homey feel.

Here are the top 5 things I bring with me to every interior styling session:

1. Candlesticks

Great for grouping together and adding height to shelves and surfaces where everything is on the same level. Bunches of varying candle sticks with different heights add tons of textures. PS—if you are going to use candles please please please burn them for a little bit first. Un-burned taper candles are designer-kryptonite.

2. Baskets

Literally can not have enough storage. Baskets are great in almost any room to add extra easy accessible storage for toys, winter hats, blankets, towel, toilet paper etc. We LOVE baskets!

3. Pillows

An easy way to bring in a bit of diversity of color or pattern into a completed space. Pillows are the best because they are not expensive–which means you can change them up more often than other items to give your space a new vibe.

4. Plants

You know we love plants. I don’t consider a space complete until we put a few plants in it. Read all our gushings about plants here, here and here. Oh yeah– and here.

5. Trays

Similar to baskets– trays are our favorite combination of practical + pretty. They are super functional in active households– great for grouping center pieces on coffee tables/dining tables/islands–that can easily be moved out of the way to make room for family activities.

Styling doesn’t need to be stressful…or expensive. Shop your house, your thrift shop, or splurge on some well-chosen pieces that you really love for you space. Need help with styling or ready to reno the whole room?
