In a busy young family the master bedroom tends to be the last room in the house to get addressed. We want to put our best foot forward when it comes to the spaces that more people will see and use. But taking the time to create a relaxing retreat + ‘adult-only’ space is equally important. And I am SO HAPPY our recent clients realized that. They recently finished up a new construction project and decided to dive right into creating an oasis for just the two of them. Check out how we created a soothing master bedroom for them to retreat to at the end of a long day.

 A SOOTHING MASTER BEDROOM

THE DESIGN PLAN: Since this was new construction the majority of the finishes had to stay: wall color, trim color, lighting and carpet. We just needed to dress of the rest of the space to make it feel as grand as the bones of this new house. We opted for neutral colors to coordinate with the existing finishes but injected some accent colors through accent textiles. Since this space had to speak to both husband and wife, we balanced feminine feeling colors with more masculine textures like leather, raw wood and steel.

THE BED: This space had super-tall ceilings and we wanted to create a statement piece out of the bed. We searched retail sources for a bed that would give this space a huge impac. But we didn’t come up with anything large enough. We decided to have this massive 6′ tall headboard custom-made to give the space the feel of a high-end hotel room. The fabric is a simple neutral with just a little bit of sheen –making this piece feel even more luxurious. Custom pillows in a variety of textures and patterns top off the overall look.

DESIGN TIP: HANG CURTAINS ALL THE WAY AT THE CEILING FOR A HIGH END FEEL THAT EMPHASIZES THE ROOM HEIGHT.

GO BIG OR GO HOME: When you have as much wall space and height as this room had you have the chance to use some statement pieces. This extra long dresser adds functional storage and a touch of masculinity to the space and is highlighted by one of our favorite round mirrors.

A COZY CORNER: Any soothing master bedroom retreat wouldn’t be complete without a cozy corner to curl up in. We continued the neutral textiles found on the bed into this chair. Adding a small side table in raw wood helps to balance some of the more feminine touches in the space.

This room was the perfect blank canvas to start with. Through a few custom elements, a good mixture of masculine + feminine elements and a functional design layout we have created a soothing master bedroom for a wonderful client.
