Recently I was lucky enough to be featured in a giveaway on the wonderful blog “Ain’t No Mom Jeans.” The lucky winner chose to address the needs of her den, which in recent times had become more of a storage area and a place she tried to avoid.
Through our questionnaire and a few emails shot back and forth I discovered what the true needs of this space were– a cozy area to read and snuggle up next to the fire, storage area for books and decorative objects and an area for computer use. A lot to ask for 194 sq ft… but not impossible my friends!
For the color scheme we chose a classic American palette centered around a two tone paint scheme—SW 7050 Useful Gray (J) and SW 6509 Georgian Blue (I) for the fireplace accent wall. Accents of red create contrast and interest in the space
The layout in the space was a bit tricky considering the size constraints and all the functional zones the client wanted to include. One great option was using a chaise lounge rather than a traditional sofa, which would have blocked the space off and made it feel too enclosed. The chaise keeps sightlines open throughout the space and allows seating layout to be more inclusive to the rest of the room.
The fireplace wall was a natural focal point in the space so we highlighted it using a bright blue accent paint. One thing that was really emphasized in this space was STORAGE! Since built ins weren’t really an option with the budget the wall was designed to give the illusion of built ins. First we framed out each side of the wall your basic crown molding–painted in the same color as the rest of the walls in the space. Then we placed 3 floating wall shelves from Ikea and 3 wall mounted cabinets from CB2.Tadah! The result is a cohesive and gorgeous storage wall at a fraction of the cost.

Overall the project was a blast to work on! With classic color scheme, smart storage solutions, and appropriate furniture selections this is no longer a place the client will avoid. I look forward to sharing the installation photos!
