Every year, while Santa is busy in his workshop, the Curio Design Studio elves put their heads together and, in one of our favorite tasks of the year, make our predictions for the design trends for the coming year. Remember our 2021 visions?

This year we are talking textures, retro, warm tones, and earthy, sustainable shapes. With no further ado, our gift to you, the design predictions for 2022.

Textured wood coming in with the retro vibes.

After two years in a row of predictions for more warm wood in design trends, textured wood is in line with the shift from painted cupboards to make way for artisanal-looking, furniture-like cabinetry and woodwork. Not to mention that it shows us an updated look at 70s aesthetics, which brings us to…

The return of reds, browns, and terra cottas.

Frankly, after another *slightly* stressful year, we love predicting warm, comforting tones. This rebellion against the cool grays that have dominated the color scape for so long is a return to the toasty retro tones of your grandma’s living room.

Pattern on pattern

In a nod to traditional design, we predict more and more pattern mixing. Big florals with small florals. Floral with modern plaid. This trend let’s us pack as much pattern into a room as possible…JUST on the edge of being too damn much. One more pattern? Too much. Dial it back just a tad. Perfect.

Ceilings with details.

Remember what we said in the last prediction about pushing the envelope of pattern on pattern (on pattern)? Don’t forget the ceiling when you’re adding details. It’s the perfect place for wallpaper (YES, it is), moulding, or an accent color.

Organic shapes (bonus points given for actually being organic or sustainable)

While many trends nod back to traditional design, we predict more organic, natural shapes…with an increasing number of those designs focusing on sustainability. Looking to the past gives great inspiration for new design trends, but we want to have a future…so even the design industry is evaluating the places, methods, and materials that make sense when it comes to carbon emissions and the environment.

Want one of these predictions in your home, you little trendsetter, you? Reach out to us here!

Sincerely,
Allison
