Whenever we get a client who is not afraid of color, we run with it! This Marquette eastside living room was no exception! The client wanted fun, color and hints of mid century, while still fitting into the old bones of the house. Check out the design plan we put together for the Eastside Jewel Tone!
EASTSIDE JEWEL TONE
The material scheme was all about color and layering of pattern. The main pieces of furniture pack a bold bunch, but are balanced by the existing light colored grasscloth walls.
The Sven Velvet sofa in grass green was a huge focal point to the design plan.
Getting the furniture layout was also important here. The room was large, but also awkwardly rectangular. The traditional bones of the house coupled with the fireplace made the space scream for a symmetrical/semi-formal space plan. Centering everything at the fireplace left us with a big space to fill on the left side of the plan.
To combat that, we came up with the idea to create a small sitting area at the window. Not only does this help balance the seating layout, it allows for extra seating to be pulled into the main seating area when needed.
On the far end of the room were a pair of built in bookcases with amazing arched tops. We wanted to draw attention to that end of the room and create contrast. We suggested painting the trim work in a dark navy and lining the back the bookcases in wallpaper with a more traditional pattern.
DESIGNER TIP: Transitional style works great in older homes with young modern people living in them. To bridge the gap between traditional + modern try using a generally traditional pattern or shape and increasing the scale.
That is what we did with this amazing navy wallpaper from Graham and Brown. More traditional pattern + oversize scale = a great fit for a modern space in a historical home!
We injected some more pattern to compliment the wallpaper through various accent textiles for the chair and sofa pillows. Because–hey– when you have client ready for color + pattern you go for it!
Overall the design is full over color and pattern, but the scale of the room and neutral walls help to balance it all out. Its modern but formal, colorful but understated at the same time. Can’t wait to share final pictures of this jewel tone space!
