There are certain design rules that are meant to be broken. Black and brown do actually match… the right polka dot can complement any stripe…and metallic finishes in your space do not have to be limited to either silver or gold. Mixing and matching metals is a fun and unique way to express your chic style.  Think of metallic as the new neutral! You wouldn’t hesitate to have several shades of a warm neutral in your space so don’t be afraid to take the same plunge when it comes to metallic.

Curio’s Cardinal Rules of Mixing Metals are:

  1. Keep it simple; try not to incorporate more than 2-3 different metallic tones.
  2. Keep it together: utilize groupings of 3-5 metallic objects to create a sophisticated and balanced look. Choose your finishes by category. For example: all lighting in one finish, all hardware in another.
  3. Keep in mind…some finishes fall into what we consider a ‘utilitarian’ category because appliances or sinks tend to have limited finishes…when mixing metals, we ignore utilitarian finishes when considering the first two rules.
  4. Keep it flexible – these rules are rigorous, but not absolute. Trust your design instincts (and your designer!) For example, a tiny powder room and you have one sink and one faucet, we might have those main finishes matching and bring in a second finish through an accessory like a picture frame or metal shelf.
