I’M AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND I’M NOT JUDGING YOU

LISTEN UP.

It’s always hard to open up our home to strangers. Before we have guests we usually fuss about, cleaning and straighting items. We don’t want to appear to live like slobs to the outside world right?!

It’s even harder when that person coming to see your home is an interior designer right? Surely they are looking around constantly judging you, critiquing your color choices or unfinished projects.

STOP.

I AM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND I’M NOT JUDGING YOU.

There are two things I always tell my clients:

1. Life is busy and real and messy.
2. Design is a process to refine and simplify that life.

This is true for my own home too.  The kids destroy it, we have messes and toys and piles. We have ongoing projects, oh boy do we have ongoing projects

When I come to your house to talk about your new project, I am not judging you. I am evaluating what I can do to help make your home work better for you. Where you see piles, I see problems looking for creative solutions.

Design does not always look like the AFTER images we see on Pinterest. Yes, that is a HUGE part of it, but the more important part of design is how easy it is for you to get to that AFTER image day after day.

Having a well-designed home means there are places for things to go.  A proper drop zone at your front door that contains all the mail and keys and clutter. A well-designed mudroom that can easily contain everything for your family. And YES life will spill outside these zones occasionally (OK all the time) but the main goal is that there is a quick, easy intuitive place for things to go when it is time to clean up.

So if the one thing holding you back from calling me is “oh but what will she think of this awful color choice we made, or all the kids toys everywhere–it’s so not glamorous in here…”

STOP.

I AM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND I’M NOT JUDGING YOU.

Happy Designing!

Sincerely,
Allison
