A Shared Space Built for How a Family Actually Lives :: Some rooms in a home hold so much potential, they just need a vision and a plan. For this family, a large, underutilized upper-floor became the starting point for a renovation designed around real life.
BEFORE: A Space Without a Clear Purpose
The existing room had good bones but no direction. The various rooms of the third floor were disconnected with no cohesive consideration for how the space would function as a true entertainment destination.
Like many bonus spaces, it had become a catchall, so much potential in theory but underperforming in practice.

THE PLAN: One Floor, Four Distinct Zones
The design strategy centered on transforming this from overlooked to fully maximized and multi-use. Key elements included:
- A drop-down screen with flexible seating and a recessed bulkhead to conceal it cleanly within the coffered ceiling layout
- A kitchenette area with traditional wood cabinetry, natural stone countertops, cabinet lighting, accent wallpaper, and elevated trim details.
- A game area with focal lighting designed to highlight the ceiling architecture and additional seating with sightlines to the screen
- A powder room with dark walls and ceiling, wallpaper accenting the space, and a contemporary vanity.
The result is zones that feel distinct but cohesive, a room that can host a crowd or a quiet evening with equal ease.
DESIGN INSPIRATION: Classic Family Living with a Modern Point of View
The project concept called for elegant family living with a modern touch. Traditional casework and custom details share space with sculptural furniture, bold lighting choices, and layered pattern and texture.
Warm wood cabinetry paired with natural stone, a brass chandelier and pendant lights, a focal wallpaper that feels painterly and lush, an area rug with graphic geometry, and artwork that brings color and movement into a space grounded in neutral tones. The kitchenette’s white quartz bar sink and brass plumbing fixtures feel curated rather than functional by necessity. The powder room’s black marble countertop is a deliberate counterpoint to the warmth of the main space.
Every decision was made to serve a room that needed to work hard and look good doing it.
