We LOVE a project reveal. It is what everyone wants to see–the big BEFORE + AFTER. As a reader you probably take them for granted. As a design + build company we are always eager to share them after a YEAR of work.

From planning, through revising, to pricing and purchasing. From demo to installing the final cabinet knob. A LOT goes into a renovation and we do our best to condense all of that into one quick blog post.

THE BEFORE.

The main problem was this space was EXTREMELY tight and cut off from the rest of the main living space. The corner at the sink made it impossible for two people to use the space at the same time. We needed to think seriously about flow and function before diving into design details.

THE PLAN.

A reconfiguration was majorly needed. We opted to offset the sink from the window to give a better layout for two kitchen users. This allowed for there to be a large, bright prep space next to the fridge. It also gave us room to add an island that doubles as a dining space.

Our client wanted a subtle scheme that made the space feel relaxed and welcoming. We decided to opt for a mix of THREE cabinet finishes to give them a lot of simple texture.

We wanted the island to feel like a focal point so we went on the hunt for the most amazing natural slab of dark granite. The island is topped off with a chandelier (vs. expected island pendants) to help define this space as a the dining area and help solidify the asymmetrical design of the island.

Since we had really large blocks of color and minimal pattern we opted for a more decorative backsplash to bring pattern into the space. The tone on tone pattern is subtle but brings a lot of interest to the space.

A mix of metal and brass fixtures help to add diversity and interest to the space. Hint– we ALWAYS mix metal finishes, see how we do it here.
