The details matter.

When we start a project, everyone is excited about the big vision plan and the Pinterest-worthy reveal. Part of my job as the designer is to support that vibe while also bringing attention to details. Small things. The oft-overlooked design make or breaks. Like…GROUT.

Stay with me here! Grout sounds boring, but these kinds of decisions can end up affecting the experience of your space once it is complete. Just like choosing the sheen of your paint, these types of decisions are easily overlooked but getting them right is critical.

In general, I shy away from white. Even with a quality grout that gets regular care and cleaning, white can become stained and show soap scum over time. I tend to lean towards a darker choice like Mapei pewter (found at your standard big box store like Lowes!) a safe warm gray that maintains more easily and will still provide a low contrast.

Rule of thumb ONE: If you want the tile to read more as one piece with less contrast, go with a grout color that is close to the shade of your tile. A low contrast scheme is a more modern look. Just keep in mind maintenance and your tolerance for wear. If you like things picture perfect but aren’t a neat freak this is probably not the option for you!

Rule of thumb TWO: If you want to highlight every line between tile, go with a darker contrasting grout like Mapei, charcoal or black for a traditional/transitional look that is great for tiles with unique shapes. This is also a better choice for a high traffic area like kitchen that sees daily cooking or a main household bathroom. The darker grout will be easier to clean and will show less dirt over time.
