Bad news first: kitchen renovations are expensive. Good news? They are usually a very good return on investment, whether that means having a functional, heavily used space in your home or increasing the resale value.

The most important thing to remember is the HGTV isn’t telling you the truth. It’s difficult to create transformation in a kitchen for less than $30,000, particularly if you need two or more of the following: new cabinets, relocation of walls or appliances, new counters, new appliances or the help if hired pros.

(Before we dive in…not sure if you’re ready for a kitchen reno? We’ve got a post for that! 4 Things to Consider Before Your Kitchen Reno. Planning your new kitchen but not sure where to go trendy and where to keep it classic? We’re on it. On Trend v. Classic: How to Decide.)

HOW MUCH DOES A KITCHEN RENO COST?

How do these costs break down? Let’s talk it out.

CABINETRY – If you’re changing out the cabinets, the range is big, from $10,000 to $20,000 if you choose an online vendor or IKEA, or even more if you are having them all custom made. This price tag feels big, but the cabinetry is a HUGE part of the function and style of your new kitchen.

COUNTERS – This can vary depending on the size of your counter space, but we generally suggest a range of $5000-$10,000 for quartz or stone. A safe estimate is $100 for every square foot installed.

APPLIANCES – Replacing a few key items or the whole kit and caboodle? Depending on what you choose from refrigerator, dishwasher, range, range hood and microwave, this can be anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 for mid-grade appliances. You creep up in towards the higher end of that spectrum when you add things like a larger range, decorative range hoods, under counter microwave, and other custom options.

FIXTURES AND ACCESSORIES – Your lighting, hardware, plumbing fixtures and accessories will add $2,000-$5,000 to your budget.

LABOR – This cost varies widely depending on if any of it is DIY or if you have a handy friend or parent that comes to help you out. How much you rearrange the space changes this cost as well since bigger changes will require things like a structural engineer, permits and additional electric work. The overall range is $10,000-$20,000+

Add that all up and we are talking anywhere from $20,000-$65,000 + for a full gut kitchen reno.
