The kitchen is the center of your house, the hub of activity and the room where people tend to gather. Having a kitchen you LOVE sets the tone for your home, but the decision making process when designing such a crucial space can be daunting…and paralyzing!

Never fear, the Curio Team is here. We’ve made a list of 4 key things to consider before starting your kitchen renovation:

4 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOUR KITCHEN RENO

Appliances, the unsung hero of the kitchen.

Talking about refrigerators may not be the sexiest part of my job, but the choices we make for the size and style of your range and your fridge are foundational to the design of your space. Clearances and door swings of ovens and refrigerators (exciting, I know!) are all determined by these factors.

Next we consider whether you want your countertop appliances concealed. Do you want to showcase your KitchenAid or your coffee pot, or do you want them out of the way in a designated (but convenient!) pantry? Starting with clarity on these decisions make the entire renovation process easier.

How many people will be using the space regularly?

Knowing whether your kitchen will be a place for just you and your immediate family or a place you normally host large groups helps determine important big concepts like how we lay out the space as well as informing details like how much clearance to leave between cabinets and an island.

General clearances between cabinets, or cabinet and island is around 36” minimum, but if you plan on having large groups or multiple chefs in your kitchen it is better to push that distance to 44”.

Is this a starter house or your forever home?

Taking some time to consider whether or not you plan to stay in your current home long-term will give you a better idea of how customized you want to make your new kitchen. Forever home? Then we always suggest in investing in something you LOVE LOVE LOVE and is totally unique to your style (Yay! Colored cabinets!) and needs.

Planning to upgrade or downsize in the near-ish future? We will use your tastes and preferences into account while designing something that might appeal to a larger group of people (Beautiful neutrals!).

Everyone’s favorite topic…BUDGET!

I know I know, you’re thinking ‘why you gotta bring me down?’ with the number crunching?

Thinking about the dollars and cents of a renovation can be stressful or overwhelming, but it’s better to have clear expectations (we talk more about managing expectations in this post) and goals before getting started. Realistically, you’ll need to spend a minimum of $20,000 to do a full kitchen renovation. Those costs could easily be higher depending on labor costs in your area, how much labor you plan to take on yourself, and what customizations you choose.

Sincerely,
Allison
