INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS 2019

The Curio team is VERY into New Years. Champagne, sequins, and fresh starts. What’s not to love? As we looked back on 2018 and bid her farewell, we loved seeing the way our 2018 Trend Predictions came to life. From matte black and copper hardware to pattern mixing in 2018, we are visualizing some continued rich, textured trends as we move into the new year.

So what trends is Curio predicting for 2019? *drumroll please* Feast your eyes on gorgeous photo prints, brutalism revisited, intense floral prints and more.

MOODY PHOTOGRAPHY

We love using photography as wall decor to add a personal, sophisticated look to a space. We’re feeling the the dark tones (and mood!) of this print by -et images…imagine this gorgeousness LARGE scale as a visual centerpiece.

SIMPLIFIED TRADITIONAL LIGHT FIXTURES

We are always here for the classic look of a candelabra, but we’re predicting updated, essentialist versions like the Luca Chandelier from Pottery Barn or Currey and Company’s Saxon Chandelier will catch on this year to bring oh so much light with a modern touch.

DARK CABINETRY COLORS

We’ve already been singing the praises of black kitchen cabinetry, and this is one up and coming trend that we think will continue to thrive and grow in 2019. These dark, rich tones make a neutral palette more interesting (read: GORG) and allow you to use the Magic Eraser just a *little* less.

BLACK BATHROOMS

Bathrooms are often a neglected, overlooked space in our client’s otherwise totally amazing homes. We tend to just think you slap up some white or light neutrals in what is often a smaller space and call it a day. But no more! We’re here to preach the gospel of black paint in bathrooms (Don’t panic! We’ve compiled all our fave black colors for you already!) to make this space more interestings and sophisticated. Can I get an amen?

ARCHITECTURAL WALL DETAILS

Shiplap has had its day…ok, let’s be real it has had WAY more than its day (my apologies to the Magnolia ride or die) and we’re so ready for something ELSE when it comes to wall details. Curio is predicting more sophisticated architectural touches like coffered walls or picture rail trim for 2019.

MORE FLORALS

We’ve seen florals make a comeback in recent years, and we predict that this trend continues into 2019 and gets even BOLDER. We’re translating a love of a sophisticated but whimsical flower filled prints onto our clients walls this year. Does the thought of floral wallpaper bring up traumatizing memories of your Grandma’s decor? Check out the Graham and Brown Amalfi Umore print, Spoonflower’s Fable Floral wallpaper and the Anthropologie Sketched Songbird print. This ain’t Nana’s house!

PATTERN BACKSPLASH AND FLOORS

We are using this guide to our favorite patterned faux cement tiles as the jumping off point for our prediction of patterns taking over backsplashes and tiled floors. Adding patterned tile to the right space is like adding lipstick to the right outfit…you were already looking fine, but now you’re fab.

WARMER NEUTRALS AND GRAYS

For a few years, true grays have been the trend in neutrals. We’d often see these cool tones next to white cabinets or trim for a bright but stark look. As we move into 2019, grays specifically and neutrals in general will trend a bit warmer. Picture this as a compromise between the total gray trends of early 2010’s and the extremely brown/oak trend of late 90’s early 2000’s…like wearing a straight leg when you’re trying to forget a bootcut but want to avoid skinny jeans. (Psssst…we’re here to help you figure out which of these new neutrals will pair with the oak you just can’t replace yet.)

BRUTALIST INSPIRED FURNITURE AND DECOR

Brutalism, a popular style from the 1970’s that peaked with the height of Soviet Communism, is about to take over the space the midcentury furniture trend has been occupying for a few years. Brutalist pieces have solid lines and give the heavy feel of a sculptural piece. CB2 has been nailing this look and we love the Peak Media Credenza, Stack Hi-Gloss Wood Console Table and Hex Small Ivory Sidetable in their current line.
