When I sit down with my clients to help them define their design aesthetic and prioritize updates or renovations in their home or business, we often end up at the same question when choosing details.
Do you go for the trendy look you are loving that reflects the current styles?
Or do you choose a reliable classic look that will stand the test of time?
The answer: both.
While timeless and time-honored design is often seen as the safe choice, it’s important to make sure the space feels current AND unique to you.
ON TREND vs CLASSIC
As a general rule of thumb, we advise our clients to go classic on anything that is a big financial investment and/or will be difficult to change down the line without a major renovation. Think flooring, backsplash and countertops.
Things that are easier to swap out like accessories (rugs, linens + pillows, artwork) and fixtures (lighting + hardware) and paint color (black accent wall anyone?!) are great for experimenting with trends that you love and taking risks to express your personality in the space.
MIX CLASSIC + TRENDS TO GET A UNIQUE STYLE
We love the look of a classic quartz counter paired with this modern, trendy fixture. For this kitchen reno we followed our basic rule of thumb. We went classic and clean for the counters ( expensive + hard to replace) and mixed in some fun fixtures to give this space a modern and unique edge.
Countertops and tile are expensive (and time-consuming!) to replace. Subway tile and natural stone look quartz are great selections for creating a time-tested look in your kitchen and bath.
CLASSIC IS ALWAYS A WINNER
Subway tile for a bathroom or a backsplash (CLASSIC!) is always a winner. This product comes in a variety of sizes, colors and finishes which lets you play around with lots of design options while still sticking with a material that will stand the test of time.
TRENDS ARE YOUR FRIEND
Choose unique and stylish lighting (TREND!) or hardware to mix in the finish or style of the moment. This helps your kitchen feel relevant without breaking the bank. They are also relatively inexpensive items that can be easily swapped out even by the DIY challenged.
