I can’t believe we are still talking about Covid.

But here we are.

When it comes to design and construction, the Covid supply chain disruptions are still a major factor. We can make it work, but planning is key.

HOW WE PLAN FOR THE UNEXPECTED : DESIGN IN THE TIME OF COVID

Hard truth: the design process alone takes anywhere from 2-4 months minimum, sometimes larger depending on scale.

Ideally, we have time to work through the entire design, revise, finalize the process prior to any construction starting so we have time to look at design and budget comprehensively.

Remember what we said about the design process being comprehensive, and not done in bits and pieces? This is why.

Once we have the design finalized, we double and triple check all lead times (* lead times are the time it takes between an order being placed and a product or service being delivered) and base the construction schedule on the date that is furthest out. (HINT: this will almost always be cabinets and big upholstered items, currently sitting at 20-30 weeks).

We place all orders at once and then wait until all the beautiful things you chose to start arriving or until we have a confirmed ship date to start construction.

Even in the time of covid, our approach still gives a super-condensed construction schedule. How are companies without a plan making it work in the era of supply chain delays? We honestly have no idea how people are doing it without a full plan in hand beforehand, but it’s probably…messy. With logistics as they are in year 2 of a pandemic, this is not the time to make decisions as you go as…unless you want your project to be REALLY, really, long. And unduly complicated.
